On July 19th, the Moving Forward Coalition launched action plans to take steps toward implementing and scaling strengths based approaches to promote nursing home quality. The nine action plans derive from the work of a committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and outlined in  “The National Imperative to Improve Nursing Home Quality” (April 2022).  The Moving Coalition is funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation and run under the auspices of LeadingAge. It includes numerous committees and workgroups and counts more than 1,000 stakeholders among its membership.  Each of the action plans documents a challenge nursing homes face today and defines focused goals and a stepwise path to achieving them. Some of the work involves small scale experimentation with new approaches, some involves support for broader approaches. The Moving Forward Coalition is poised to enter its second year. It has, so far, demonstrated that stakeholders from all sectors (e.g., providers, consumers, researchers, associations, etc.) can engage in meaningful discussion and come to agreement on plans to “move forward” together. In addition, the Coalition has kept the topic of nursing home reform in the news and on the public’s radar.
