The work is winding down as Santa Marta, a continuing care retirement community in Olathe, announces the grand opening of an $11 million expansion of its health center, The Plaza at Santa Marta. First announced in early 2015, the expansion includes 18 private skilled nursing rehabilitation suites, 12 memory support suites, and 8 assisted living one and two bedroom apartments, as well as an expanded rehabilitation gym.

“This expansion had two main purposes from the very beginning,” said Santa Marta executive director Chet Surmaczewicz. “The first was to continue keeping our promise to our current residents to provide the highest-quality senior living options in the area. The second, equally important, was to anticipate and meet a growing need for those high-quality options among area seniors.”

According to the MidAmerica Regional Council, the Kansas City area’s older adult population is expected to increase by 90 percent over its 2010 numbers by 2030.

The skilled nursing portion of the expansion will open this month, with the memory support suites and assisted living apartments to follow shortly, along with an expanded rehabilitation gym.

“We expect this will only add to Santa Marta’s legacy as a place where older adults can find great satisfaction in retirement, along with the peace of mind that comes with care options for down the road,” said Surmaczewicz. “We’re meeting the needs of our current residents, while positioning ourselves as a premier retirement choice for the next generation, as 10,000 Baby Boomers continue to retire each day.”
