Offering employees paid and unpaid leave programs is important to attracting and retaining a talented workforce and to helping employees balance their work and personal obligations. Employers must also comply with the many legal mandates for employee leave under federal, state and local laws. These include the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), workers compensation laws, the Americans with Disabilities Act and other federal, state and local laws. Navigating the interplay among employer leave policies and practices, leave laws and mandates, and employee benefit plans can pose significant challenges to employers.
