In 1986, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released the report Improving the Quality of Care in Nursing Homes. There has been no comprehensive study since that time. LeadingAge has been steadfastly advocating for a new study of how nursing home care is regulated and funded ever since it released its own report, Broken and Beyond Repair, in 2008.

Beginning next month, a 17-member ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM – next generation of IOM) will examine how our nation delivers, regulates, finances and measures quality of nursing home care, including the long-standing challenges brought to light by the COVID-19 pandemic. The primary sponsor for this study is The John A Hartford Foundation. Additional support has been provided by the Commonwealth Fund.

Kathy Greenlee is member of NASEM committee. She currently serves as the State of Kansas COVID-19 LTSS Liaison. She served as the Assistant Secretary for Aging at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services from 2009-2016. More information about the charge of the committee and its members.
