Our field is becoming increasingly more complex every year. Member organizations are at a risk of losing all of the knowledge that is held by their long-time billers, MDS Coordinators, Administrators, Director of Nurses, etc.  It is important to look ahead to the future and plan for retirements or the possible resignation of key players like these, so that there is not an interruption of critical aspects of your operation. You might consider promoting someone from within your organization early so that they can train side-by-side. Or perhaps you should think about outsourcing the function. Or, lastly, maybe a software package can best do the work for you. Whatever direction you choose, it is important to have a plan standing by so that you are not caught off guard and have an interruption in business. Our thin margins necessitate the need for us to be prepared for any change that may come our way.
