The Department of Labor recently issued a proposed rule that would remove the current restrictions on the operation of patient lifts by nursing home employees under age 18. LeadingAge National filed comments in support of this rule, pointing out that use of lifts is safer for both residents and staff than manual lifting, that a job in a nursing home can be a valuable employment opportunity for a young person, and that young workers are an essential part of the long-term care workforce.
