Hosted by Bluestem Communities

*This training has transitioned into a virtual event through Zoom.

Description
The purpose of this session is to increase awareness of dementia as a disease with an emphasis on empathy and understanding of the condition. Learners will understand the differences between ‘normal’ and ‘not normal’ aging. Brain changes that occur during the process of dementia will be addressed, including characteristics of the most common forms of dementia. Learners will also understand the ways in which these structural brain changes contribute to changes in everyday function, including changes that are seen throughout the progression of dementia. Common problematic interactions and situations will be discussed and demonstrated in combination with simple and effective strategies to recognize the condition, engage the individual, and reduce their distress. Both physical and verbal interaction techniques to help manage challenging situations will be introduced.

Objectives
By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

  1. Discriminate between ‘normal’ and ‘not normal’ processes of aging, including possible early warning signs of dementia
  2. Understand brain changes that occur during the progression of dementia
  3. Discuss differences among the most common forms of dementia
  4. Describe common symptoms and behaviors that may be indicative of dementia and may require a ‘special’ approach
  5. Understand verbal and physical techniques that may be used during challenging situations to approach and interact with individuals who may be living with dementia
