Safe and Usable Outdoor Spaces for Assisted Living and Other Senior Living Residences is a DVD that takes into account the areas (identified by residents themselves) that most impact their use or non-use of outdoor areas, and give before and after scenarios on how to design these areas more effectively. It shows how to strategically place trees, shrubs, and flowers that create attractive views while providing a sense of safety and comfort, and shares ways to further promote use of outdoor areas through lighting, space, and texture considerations. The video also includes a ‘simulated walk’ in which a representative resident identifies the safety and convenience elements that would make his walk more pleasant. It also emphasizes elements of outdoor safety, and planned space for outdoor activities, such as, gardening, exercise, games, play area for visiting children, and water fountains.
