According to a July 7th report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of healthcare jobs increased by 41,000 in June. Hospitals (+15,000), nursing and residential care facilities (+12,000), and home health care services (+9,000) all saw growth in June. The number of new jobs in hospitals fell compared to the number of new added in May, while new jobs in June exceeded the number of new in May for nursing and residential care services and home health. Health care has added an average of 42,000 jobs per month thus far in 2023, similar to the average gain of 46,000 per month in 2022. In aggregate, the U.S. added 209,000 non-farm jobs last month, down from the 339,000 added in May. The nation’s unemployment rate fell by 0.1 percentage point to 3.6% in June, a rate that has ranged from 3.4% to 3.7% since March 2022. The Bureau’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover report for May 2023 , however, confirms that demand for labor still notably exceeds supply, with data showing a ratio of 0.6 unemployed persons per job opening – i.e., there are approximately +1.6 jobs for every one individual seeking employment.
