Despite the plain reading of the statute, and decades of precedent, we have been informed that the Kansas Board of Cosmetology is insisting on their ability to license and inspect the beauty services and rooms in adult care homes. They have started sending threatening letters to our members, and are justifying their position with a 50 year old opinion from the attorney general’s office. The board of cosmetology is forwarding these same letters to KDADS staff who are also challenging the board’s stance on salon licensing in adult care homes.

We are working to resolve this issue, and want to provide this important update to our recent article informing members that salon licenses are not necessary.

Until we find a solution to this new challenge from the board of cosmetology, we are retracting our advice. If the board of cosmetology reaches out to you about licensing, know that they are threatening to enforce disciplinary fines for failure to hold a valid salon license.
