The TeamSTEPPS® grant project team is off and running. Over the next two years the team hopes to reduce off-label antipsychotic medication use rates in Kansas. How? Keep reading! The LeadingAge Kansas Foundation and the Washburn University School of Nursing have partnered to bring TeamSTEPPS® 2.0 for Long-Term Care trainings to your region. This teamwork and communication approach was developed by The Agency for Health Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Department of Defense (DoD). It is used in various healthcare settings across the country and has been shown to improve quality of care for clients and increase job satisfaction for staff members.

The project team is excited to help organizations learn and use TeamSTEPPS® to increase communication, improve teamwork and use program techniques to improve care quality. More information on TeamSTEPPS® 2.0 for Long-Term Care will be shared in upcoming issues so stay tuned! If you can’t wait and want to learn more today, visit AHRQ (Connect to this link.

Over the next two years, regional trainings will be provided that will afford low or no cost opportunities to send a team to a two-day, train-the trainer workshop. The trainings will include effective and easy to implement strategies, as well as training on how to use the publicly available curriculum for in-house training. After each regional training, there will be an opportunity for interested organizations to apply for in-depth, on-site training and support from the project team. The selected homes will undergo an organizational assessment, have a full team training, access to technical assistance from the project team and follow-up sessions to ensure new practices are sustained. By project end, the goal is to have 900 individuals trained in the TeamSTEPPS® processes. Watch for training dates so your team can attend.

This project is supported by a grant from the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services.
