Many older adults struggle with lifelong addictions or become addicted to prescription drugs that they take for coping with physical or psychological pain. There has been little attention, however, focused on this problem in nursing homes, where powerful pain medications are administered routinely.
The nursing home setting provides complex challenges for staff and administrators attempting to provide safe and high-quality care for older adults with opioid use disorders (OUDs). Nurses working in long-term care settings need to be sensitive to the possibility of older adults having an OUD and identify strategies to support them.
Please join us for a two-part series as we discuss Opioid risks and overdose prevention in the long-term care environment. This series will provide data and information to raise awareness of the opioid crisis we are living in, and the impact it has on the older adult population. Participants will learn what opioids are, the risks associated with them and how to prevent adverse effects from occurring.
Nursing home threats will be addressed, as well as possible stewardship strategies to reduce the risks. The second session will include training on how to recognize an opioid overdose and respond by administering naloxone to save a life.
