KFF hosted a webinar on December 5th, “The Long-Term Care Crisis – Why Few Can Afford to Grow Old in America.” Featuring authors Jonathan Rau and Reed Abelson, as well as Anne Tumlinson of ATI and two-family caregivers who were interviewed for the series and spoke eloquently about the emotional and financial costs of caring for a parent.

Anne Tumlinson told participants that a number of solutions have been discussed, but “the private market cannot solve this by itself.” She pointed out that technically, it is “actually simple” to put a program in place, but we haven’t had the political will. In addition to describing caregiving and family stresses, speakers discussed the valuable work done by frontline staff – “these are really difficult jobs,” Jordan Rau said.
