We are excited to announce that March 4-8 will be the dates for the second annual Careers in Aging Services week in 2019. If you didn’t have the opportunity to join us last year, please make plans to do it this year. This is a great opportunity to showcase the great work you do in your community to potential employees. It’s a feel-good week and we can all use one of those, right?

One of the 4 pillars of improving the workforce crisis in Kansas is to raise the image of aging services – especially long-term care. This week will help you with good PR in your community, raising the knowledge of careers in the field, help students get excited about serving older people and improving your pipeline in future years for employees. It’s a win, win, win.

Here are some ideas for you to begin planning:

  1. Traditional Shadow Day – you can bring high school and college students into your community and have them shadow your employees. Don’t stop with nursing! Consider HR, Accounting, Marketing, Development/Foundation, Maintenance, Dietary, Therapies, etc.
  2. Take your staff to the classroom – connect with your local high school or community college and see if you can visit their classrooms one day that week to talk about what jobs are available in your organization. Talk to them about the different service options in aging services as a whole
  3. Host an open house – bring students in from high schools, universities and tech colleges in to tour your community and highlight the great things you are doing

We had great feedback from our participants last year that our day should be extended to a week to accommodate more schedules.

Stay tuned, more information and tools will be forthcoming to help you plan.
