It’s never too late to learn something new according to some residents who, after moving to Tallgrass Creek, are discovering their inner artist.
“I’ve always wanted to learn to paint, and the lessons are right here,” says Sharon Slagle, who recently signed up for a beginner watercolor class.
The budding artists can choose watercolor and/or acrylic painting lessons taught by enthusiastic instructor Alysia Quisenberry Carter, a former high school art teacher. Carter has a bachelor’s degree in art and printmaking and has taught art classes at Tallgrass Creek for seven years. She enjoys sharing her love of art.
“It doesn’t matter how young or old, when someone falls in love with painting, they are amazed at how quickly their ability progresses,” says Carter. “I love watching that happen.”
Art classes meet each week in Tallgrass Creek’s sunny art room in both mornings and afternoons to accommodate busy schedules. Residents pay a nominal fee for the classes, which are divided into five-week segments with a week off in-between each module.
Carter begins by teaching basic painting concepts such as how to paint moving water and sky and also helps her students understand the delicate art of mixing colors.
“It’s a little harder than it looks,” says Pam Allen, a first-time watercolorist. “But Alysia makes sure we understand how to use the different brushes and techniques.”
Carter’s classes are not just for first-time painters. Bill Lynn has painted as a hobby for years and rarely misses a class. He credits his artistic inspiration from daughter Susan Lynn, a professional artist whose work is shown in both Kansas and Massachusetts galleries.
“I enjoy the creative aspect of painting, but mostly it’s just fun,” says Bill, a retired mechanical contractor and engineer.
Though Carter loves painting (she has sold several of her own pieces), her classes are about more than art.
“I’ve taught at Tallgrass for years, and I’m still astounded at the talent that emerges,” says Carter. “I always learn from my students and love seeing life through their eyes.”
