According to new results from the 2023 McKnight’s Mood of the Market survey, nearly half of all nursing home leaders have considered quitting, down from a high of 55% in 2022. There is some difference across job classifications with 47% of administrators and 54% of nursing directors having considered quitting.
“That should be an industry wake-up call that half of the people in administration or [Director of Nursing (DON) roles] are continuously considering quitting their job,” Cara Silletto, president and chief retention officer of workforce, Magnet Culture, told McKnight’s.
While it appears that fewer nursing home managers are leaving over COVID-19, many still say the pandemic and the conditions it led to have made them more likely to exit the profession. In 2022, nearly 20% of respondents rated their opportunities for advancement as “excellent.” In 2023, that dropped to less than 16%. Staff pointed to challenging workloads that have continued in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic with 17% of Administrators and 22% of DONs reporting that they are asked to do “too much work.” The 2023 McKnight’s Mood of the Market survey can be found here.
