The Office of the State Fire Marshal sent out the following message for health care providers on the process for decommissioning a fire rated door:
There has been an issue which has been brought to our attention that needs to be addressed concerning a company selling their product to decommission a rated door. The link below is a product that is promoting a label that can be affixed over fire rated labels. The website says this act “decommissions a fire rated door.” This process is not allowed.
If a facility wishes to make changes to the design of the building, they MUST go through a plan review process and get the door decommissioned through a licensed architect or engineer. One cannot just take out a barrier wall or door to avoid ITM (inspection, testing and maintenance.)
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the fire marshal’s office
