The 2016 Summer Olympics didn’t go unnoticed at Sunshine Meadows. The games aired each day on SunnyVisionm, a television in Sunny’s Café, a community-integrated restaurant, and the residents held their own form of Olympic-style games. The staff members didn’t want to be left out so they got together to create three teams, and residents gathered to watch them strive for the gold.

Activities staff members worked to insure that every detail was remembered from the lighting of the torch, the parade of champions, the music, and of course, the many events and the medals the champs earned. Since it was a staff Olympics, games varied considerably from the international scene. Instead of relays of lightning-fast runners, there were relays of teams running to dab their noses in Vaseline, then without using their hands, to attract a cotton ball to said nose and run back to the start. Another game had runners waving pizza boxes at Styrofoam eggs (almost the size of footballs) in order to coax them, without touching, to the finish line. Other games involved props such as a hula hoop and cookies.

As with the real Olympics, accusations of cheating abounded, but team spirit was high, and audience participation was much great. Residents were not averse to kicking eggs back into play that strayed into the stands. Every participant was awarded medals, and the room practically reverberated to the universal singing of The Star Spangled Banner, with patriotism and enthusiasm at an all-time high.

Every participant and observer went away happy. Videos of the hijinks can be viewed on the Sunshine Meadows Facebook page. SMRC is proud of the Activities Department for all of their hard work, and of all of the staff members who participated from every department.
