Reminder from HOC at KDADS on CNA Curriculum: Classroom Time Versus Clinical Time

The Health Occupations Credentialing division within the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services has received several questions related to the time limits set in the curriculum for classroom time versus clinical times for CNA courses. The CNA Instructor Manual says, “Class time should be within reasonable limits; no more than 8 hours per day of instruction with lunchtime and breaks provided.”

KDADS has concluded that the 8 hours refers to the didactic portion of the course. That the time in a class should not exceed eight hours and not go past 9:00 p.m. with breaks and lunch excluded.

Part II Clinical times should not exceed 12 hours with breaks and lunch excluded and not go past 9:00 p.m. KDADS HOC suggests each school reach out to the State of Kansas Department of Labor when it comes to teaching students under the age of 18 to ensure compliance with the state’s Child Labor Laws.

Instructors with further questions should contact their course supervisor for CNA.
