The Office of the State Fire Marshal would like to alert facilities in the 785 and 620 area codes that starting this week, Kansans in those area codes will have to dial 10-digit phone numbers to access local numbers due to a change announced by the FCC.

Ten-digit dialing has been enabled in these area codes since April 24, 2021 and with the change this week you can no longer use a seven-digit number, even if you are in the same area code as the number you are calling.

This will also affect fire alarms as the number they dial out must be updated to include the area code and possibly 1 before the number. Call the company servicing your alarm system to get information on updating the phone number.

For more information about this change you may view the link below to the FCC’s website.

To contact the OSFM for more information you may email john.sprague@ks.gov or call 785-296-3401.
