The Kansas House Assistant Majority Leader Les Mason passed away Monday evening after suffering a brain aneurysm the prior weekend. Governor Kelly ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until sundown on the day of interment. Representative Mason has served in the legislature for the past 10 years and had filed to seek reelection again in 2024. He served as the chair of the House Social Services Budget and filtered recommendations from that committee to House Appropriations. This past legislative session, Representative Mason served as the chair of the Subcommittee on Contract Nursing and supported recommendations to gain oversight of staffing agencies in Kansas through registration and reporting requirements, while also recognizing the need to enhance the healthcare workforce through other legislative actions. Representative Mason was a champion for aging services and will be greatly missed.

Senator Rick Wilborn, who originally planned to retire after the 2024 session, filed to run for the House District 73 seat stating he could not replace Representative Mason, but he was driven to run for the House “on behalf of Les.” You can read more on what fellow legislators are sharing in remembrance of Representative Mason.
