LEADINGAGE KANSAS UPDATES
Reopening Plans Clearinghouse
The Board has requested that the Association create a clearinghouse of member reopening plans. The plans will be available for members to view as examples. They will not be shared with any state or federal agency or outside group. Please send your plan to dana@leadingagekansas.org. Thank you.
Associations Amending Funding Proposal Request
LeadingAge Kansas, as informed by Board discussion, is working with KHCA and KACE to amend the original funding proposal that we sent to the Governor and KDADS two months ago. We will share the amended proposal with the Board tomorrow and with the membership on Friday. The amended version will be shared the Governor, KDADS, the Medicaid State Director and members of the SPARK Task Force next week. Reality: The amount we will request from SPARK will likely exceed the amount available through them.
Plan to Develop RFP for SPARK Funding to Local County Commission
SPARK has sent a total of $500M to county governments for COVID-19 relief and planning that the counties are to distribute via an RFP process locally. It is imperative that each LeadingAge Kansas member approach their county commission or county administrator to tell them them about the plight of your organization and your likely asks for funding.
Provide a profile of important facts about your organization such as people served and employed, economic contribution to the county/community, etc. Some ideas could be paying for testing costs, extra PPE costs, revenue loss due to lack of admissions, physical environment changes to prepare for COVID in your building ex isolation rooms, or physical changes to better accommodate family visitation, etc. If you are one among several LTC providers in your county it might be helpful to talk together to see if you have ideas that can be requested collectively. From what we know, the RFPs will be sent in September.

- Oral Care As Pneumonia Prevention: The recently released “Mouth Care Without a Battle” implementation study is the first to examine whether a pragmatic program of mouth care (tooth brushing, flossing and gum care) provided by nursing home staff reduces pneumonia. Robyn Stone of the LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston called the study “an exciting step forward in translating evidence into daily care practice.” The paper is available on the JAMA Network Open website now.
