As the new activity director at SunPorch of Dodge City, Shyanne Sharp realizes there is more to the job than organizing events for the elders who live at the short-term rehab and long-term-care residence.
“It is so much more than providing activities,” said Sharp, a Minneola native. “I interact with each elder every day and want to ensure we are making a positive difference in their lives.
“The goal is to see that each person has the opportunity to socialize, enjoy activities, and feel a sense of belonging and accomplishment. I want to know their day is better because of an activity or socializing over some coffee and donuts.”
Interaction with others is “so very important because it brings a sense of joy,” Sharp added. “In the short time I have been here, I am already getting to know each person, while I learn about their likes and dislikes.”
When elders participate in something they like to do, maybe the activity will trigger good memories, Sharp noted.
“We want to ensure elders feel at home here and are given the opportunity to participate in the pastimes they enjoy,” she said.
Activities include bowling, bean-bag toss, bingo, poker night, arts and crafts, birthday parties, exercises, puzzles and ice cream socials. Sharp is in the process of adding to this list.
The new activity director chose SunPorch, 501 W. Beeson Rd., because “it stands out from all other long-term-care residences I have seen over the years. I was truly blown away when I came here because I see the compassion and work ethic of each staff member; they genuinely care about the well-being of everyone here.
“The staff welcomed me and I instantly adored the elders,” she continued. “It is a good feeling to see smiles on their faces. This is a small family and I am blessed to be part of it.”
Sharp also noted she is impressed with department directors and Administrator Ryan Salinas.
“SunPorch operates in a very organized way,” she explained. “Staff leaders take care of their departments but we all work as a team to provide the best care we can. You feel a good aura at SunPorch.”
Sharp has family in Minneola, Dodge City and Medicine Lodge. She lived in Billings, Mt., for many years.
Early in her career, Sharp was a personal-care assistant; she cared for a woman with brain cancer and a man with Parkinson’s disease.
She has worked in the food-service industry and Walmart management; she also helped her dad run a business.
“I then realized my true calling was caring for others,” Sharp said. “This is what led me to SunPorch. My next goal is becoming a certified nurse’s aide to enhance my education so that I can provide top-notch care for our elders.”
Debbie Allen, SunPorch marketing & community liaison, said “the activity director is extremely important to our elders and staff members. And Shyanne is the perfect fit; everyone is excited to have her with us. We enjoy working with her as she engages our elders by creating a fun and learning environment.”
