We are seeing an increase in Life Safety Code citations in general, and new interpretations on some things that have been considered “in compliance” in prior times. (For example, there is heightened scrutiny on smoke barriers and sealing of penetrations on both sides of the barrier. Facilities must use an approved “through penetration system.” Expandable foam cannot be used because it is not fire resistance rated, just flame spreading rated.)
The Kansas Fire Marshal recently shared the LTC Top Deficiencies and Helpful Hints to Avoid Them. This is a must-read and follow-up document for all long-term care facility physical plant managers and administrators.
The top LSC deficiencies include:
- K353/K62 – Sprinkler system inspection, testing and maintenance
- K511/K147 – Electrical
- K363/K18 – Corridor doors
- K321/K29 – Hazardous areas
- K372/K25 – Smoke barriers
- K914/K147 – Electrical systems maintenance and testing
- K379/K25 – Smoke barrier door glazing
- K271/K38 – Means of egress
- K712/K50 – Fire drills
