Description
The purpose of this session is to increase awareness of dementia as a disease with an emphasis on empathy and understanding of the condition. Learners will understand the differences between ‘normal’ and ‘not normal’ aging. Brain changes that occur during the process of dementia will be addressed, including characteristics of the most common forms of dementia. Learners will also understand the ways in which these structural brain changes contribute to changes in everyday function, including changes that are seen throughout the progression of dementia. Common problematic interactions and situations will be discussed and demonstrated in combination with simple and effective strategies to recognize the condition, engage the individual, and reduce their distress. Both physical and verbal interaction techniques to help manage challenging situations will be introduced.
