On February 12th, Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Ed Markey (D-MA) sent a letter to Department of Labor Acting Secretary Julie Su and Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young, requesting they begin tracking workforce data for nonprofit organizations on a quarterly basis. The senators suggest the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics should include the data, currently published roughly every five years, in its Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. The letter encourages the agency to include the additional cost of $4 million dollars to report nonprofit data quarterly in its next budget request.

“This lack of timely data presents a significant barrier to accurate and effective policymaking and sector planning,” the letter says, referencing the approximately 10% of Americans who work for a nonprofit. As the premier voice for nonprofit aging service providers, LeadingAge has been closely monitoring the state of nonprofit employment and supports additional resources to collect accurate and regular data about the nonprofit workforce. Trusted wage and labor data allow LeadingAge members to make sound, real-time decisions, impacting employment, budgeting and long-term planning.
