CMS Call on White House’s “Nursing Home Vision” – March 10th, 2 PM Central
The White House’s nursing home proposals (that were supposed to be highlighted in the State of the Union Address last night but were not) will be the focus of the next CMS National Nursing Home Stakeholder Call. CMS will be leading efforts to set minimum staffing requirements, increase oversight, and making ownership more transparent. CMS plans to outline the details its “nursing home vision” and implementation strategy through national stakeholder calls, list serves, and collaboration with stakeholders. Read LeadingAge’s statement on the February 28th White House announcement on nursing homes.

NHSN “Need to Know” for Those who are New to the Requirements or Need a Quick Refresher
The best resources to start with are the NHSN webpages for the Long-Term Care COVID-19 Module and the LTC Resident and Staff Vaccination Reporting Module. From these 2 pages, you’ll find links to PDF documents to help with enrollment, different training resources for reporting, the reporting form worksheets and Tables of Instructions, and other worksheets to help with data tracking.

A nursing home must report into each of the 2 modules on a weekly basis. The reporting week runs Monday – Sunday with the cut-off being 11:59 PM on Sunday night. If no data has been received for the week by 11:59 PM on Sunday night, the nursing home will receive a citation and CMP of $1,000 for the week, which increases by $500 for each subsequent week of non-reporting.

The individual responsible for reporting into NHSN must be an enrolled user. It’s a good idea to have multiple enrolled users at any given time in case of turnover or absence because enrollment is unique to the individual and will not transfer among individuals at the nursing home, even in cases of one individual taking over another’s role. A nursing home can have multiple users, but there is only one “Facility Administrator.” Follow instructions here to reassign the Facility Administrator. Follow steps here to add new users. Probably one of the most important things to make sure that enrollment runs smoothly is ensuring accurate email addresses. Information on adding or changing emails in NHSN is here.
