Surprise LSC Interpretation on KeyPad-Controlled Doors Tabled
Earlier in the week, the State Fire Marshal Office informed us that CMS would require inspectors to cite a K222 deficiency, effective immediately, for “inappropriate” use of access-controlled egress (keypad-controlled doors.)  The interpretation (for which there was no further explanation other than reiteration of the language of K222) constitutes a surprise new interpretation.

LeadingAge Kansas, LeadingAge national in cooperation with KHCA and its national counterpart, and KACE, went to work to investigate/understand this change, and advocate for rescinding it. Yesterday afternoon we received word that the Fire Marshal is not going to cite for this until they, KDADS, CMS Region 7 and CMS national have an opportunity to further process the issue and best approach with each other.

The two LTC providers that were cited have had their deficiency removed. We will let you know if/when a clarification comes out.
