Get Ready for the Public Eye on Staff Vaccination Rates
Public pressure to “make sure” your staff are vaccinated is about to intensify -including media attention. Most of you are doing everything you can to educate staff about the benefit of vaccination… to themselves, their families, their co-workers and to the vulnerable elders they serve. You’re working to make it easy for staff to get vaccinated by working with local partners or opening a vaccine clinic yourself. A few of you provide monetary incentives. A few of you provide extra PTO or other perks to fully vaccinated staff. Like a take home meal once or twice a week, or having housekeeping do a load or two of laundry once a week. So, some employers are getting creative. A handful of members say they are considering using some of that “extra” $15 per resident day for vaccination incentives. The press is starting to publish facility-by-facility vaccination rates. Expect that to be coming to a newspaper, TV station and/or social media near you. LeadingAge Kansas, when asked, strongly advised state officials not to publish vaccination rates for every nursing home. I just heard today that some hospitals now have a policy that if an unvaccinated worker gets COVID, they are not eligible for sick leave or PTO while they are sick. Needless to say, things are getting a little intense on this issue of staff vaccination rates. I have no universal advise for members except use the information and resources at your disposal to encourage staff vaccination, be creative, and prepare for how you will respond when the media and members of your local community come knocking on your door.
