What Happens with Temporary Aides After the Governor’s Emergency Declaration Expires?
This in from KDADS Deputy Secretary Scott Brunner: The emergency declaration giving Governor Kelly additional authorities will expire on March 31. The Temporary Aide (TA) designation was authorized under this emergency declaration. When the declaration expires, TAs will not be able to continue working in that capacity without following existing training requirements as a certified nurse aide or other certified direct care position (i.e. paid nutrition assistant). KDADS has explored options to provide an expedited course. However, community colleges and some of the course operators expressed concerns about starting expedited classes for transition based on their accreditation status and instructor availability.
KDADS will continue to monitor changes in the emergency declaration that could extend the time for TAs to continue their current functions. As of now, after March 31st, those TA designations will end and those staff working under the TA designation will have to stop providing direct resident care.
Here is a list of current, approved CNA courses that have course dates. You can use this list to contact schools and see if your TAs can enroll in an existing course to become a CNA. Schools that have indicated that courses are full might be able to accommodate some additional students if you reach out to them directly.
