Our friends at the Talking Books program at the State Library of Kansas would appreciate our help in growing their number of subscribers. Any Kansan experiencing a visual impairment, a physical disability or a reading disability — any condition that interferes with reading a traditional book — is eligible to receive audio or braille books and magazines, free of charge, either through the mail or download.
A “competent authority” must certify a person’s eligibility for Talking Books. (Many of our members have been eligible to certify for years.) However, the federal government has recently expanded the types of professionals who can sign up an eligible person for Talking Books services. The list includes:
- Doctors
- Nurses
- Professional staff of long-term care facilities
- PTs and OTs
- Social workers and case managers
- Teachers
- Librarians
For more information, printable materials you can share with colleagues, and the application, please contact Maggie Witte, Maggie.witte@ks.gov, 620-341-6281, kslib.info/talking. We appreciate your support in helping us help more Kansans enjoy reading again!
