The Healthcare Interpretations Task Force (HITF) is a unique coalition of healthcare organizations and authorities having jurisdiction and convenes annually to assess and discuss interpretations of specific questions related to NFPA codes and standards. Their goal is to ensure consistency in how these codes and standards are understood and implemented.

In June, the group gathered in Orlando during the NFPA’s annual conference and exposition. The discussions and subsequent voting by members led to several interpretations that directly impact healthcare organizations, particularly those required to maintain compliance with the Life Safety Code®, including those under CMS oversight.  Three interpretations were discussed and presented: alcoves/hazardous areas, delayed locked egress locking systems, and alcohol-based hand rub dispensers.  LeadingAge’s representation at the meeting, Jensen Hughes, has prepared an overview of the Healthcare Interpretations Task Force Address Several Life Safety Issues.
