On April 2, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) formally published a final rule, Streamlining Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program, and Basic Health Program Application, Eligibility Determination, Enrollment, and Renewal Processes. This rule seeks to streamline eligibility and enrollment processes, reduce administrative burden for states and program beneficiaries, and increase enrollment and retention of individuals eligible for Medicaid and other programs. The rule does not change core eligibility requirements, but its provisions will result in States making certain changes to their eligibility and enrollment systems.

The rule is effective June 3, 2024, but implementation by states will follow a series of compliance dates ranging over a period of 12-36 months. This LeadingAge article provides an overview, with links to additional information from CMS. We will monitor implementation over the months ahead and provide more detail for members as it becomes available.
