We have had several members report receiving notices from the Audit Section of KDADS indicating that they are being audited for the past 3 years. Many homes have not had a Medicaid audit in many years, so current staff may think they have been flagged for something from their Cost Report. This is not the case. To be a Medicaid provider in the State of Kansas your organization is subject to periodic audit by this agency. Due to staffing issues and the length of time that it takes to get through all the providers in the State, it can be several years between audits.

No one likes to be audited, however it is a necessary function and could help your staff identify issues that can be corrected going forward. This is another reason for good record keeping and proper retention of invoices so that these can be accessed easily for the audit.

If you have any questions about the process, contact Lisa Stuever, LeadingAge Kansas Reimbursement Specialist, at reimbursement@leadingagekansas.org.
