Mary Chipley, Director of Nursing at High Plains Retirement Village (HPRV) in Lakin, and other team members like Miranda Barrera, have been working diligently over the past several months to decrease use of off-label antipsychotic medications. They have made great progress, and now only one resident (with a psychosis diagnosis) remains on an antipsychotic medication. Mary attributes the reduction to all staff really learning the life stories of residents, and putting that knowledge into practice to respond to each person as an individual. Plus their hospital leadership and local prescribers are on board with reducing these medications. They have witnessed remarkable “reawakenings” among several people who call HPRV home. Read the Wichita Eagle article. The organization recently celebrated their success with an event attended by KDADS Secretary Tim Keck and LeadingAge Kansas CEO Debra Zehr and other healthcare and aging services leaders. Tell us about your success story and outcomes related to reducing off-label use of antipsychotic medications.
