Step inside Santa Marta retirement community in Olathe, and you’ll see a group of seniors working together like elves. They’re not making toys, but the impact they’re having on area kids will last all winter long. Residents at the community’s recently expanded health center, The Plaza at Santa Marta, take part in a program known as Fleece 4 Friends. They create fleece blankets, which they then share with Olathe Outreach. Many of the blankets end up with homeless youth or at area hospitals. Regardless of whether they live in one of the community’s independent living apartments or at The Plaza, residents continue to lead purposeful lives, engaging in community service.
