Webinar: Dementia Communication ‘on Steroids’ during COVID with Erin Bonitto
July 28, 2020 | 1:00 – 2:00 PM

Even before COVID, providers have understood that dementia care is ‘all about the approach.’ Now, during the time of COVID – when team members may be routinely wearing masks, gown and gloves – what are the implications for dementia communication? How might the use of PPE trigger additional confusion, anxiety, and behavioral symptoms? What specific skills can the wearer use to decrease frustration and increase comprehension for the person with dementia? How might video chats leave the person bewildered or agitated – and what specific strategies can the team member use to minimize this outcome? Participants of this webinar will explore these questions and more with Erin Bonitto, a nationally-known dementia communication coach. Please come ready to share your questions, experiences and best practices as we dive into ‘dementia communication on steroids’ during COVID. Register here.

STATE UPDATES

Infection Control Surveys
KDADS reports that the agency has completed 320 Infection Control Surveys in nursing homes and 160 in state licensed only adult care homes.  Most frequent reasons for citations are deficient practices related to: proper screening, proper cohorting, not following facility policy and procedure & PPE donning and doffing.

Also, we have discovered on their website that those providers who receive deficiencies on their IC surveys will be listed on the KDADS website. We have not been informed about this so stay tuned as we ask additional questions.

LEADINGAGE UPDATE

A Meaningful Day of Remembrance

This week hundreds of individuals and organizations from around the world came together to honor older adults who have passed away due to coronavirus. Wednesday’s Global Ageing Network Remember the Elders of CoronavirusDay was filled with beautiful tributes to the elders who we have lost worldwide during the coronavirus pandemic. Your messages were heard far and wide as over 400 heartfelt posts flooded social media. We created a short montage video showcasing just a few of the incredible tributes.
