  • Weekly meeting with Associations and KDADS. During this week’s call we shared questions about COVID-19 prevalence testing and the nursing home reopening plan. We learned that the Agency is working on these, but has nothing definitive to share at this point. We shared concerns we are hearing from members who are not in favor of prevalence testing and the testing strategy in CMS’s guidance to states on reopening of nursing homes.  We shared recommendations should the prevalence testing and reopening phase-in be implemented by the State.
  • COVID-19 in the Membership – A large nursing home member had one staff member tested for COVID-19 independent of the facility. The local health department contacted the facility, and they tested 14 staff who were identified through contact tracing. All 14 tests were negative. At that point they were “free and clear” in the health department’s eyes. However, the CEO made the call to test everyone because this virus is so “stealth” and people often remain asymptomatic. Sure enough, over 2 dozen staff and a dozen residents tested positive. 97% were asymptomatic. Two had GI symptoms. The member is now working “hand-in-hand” with KDHE, KDADS, the local health department and CDC. Staff members that test positive must be off for 10 days then must have been symptom free for 72 hours before returning to work.
